Xavier Becerra Confirmed as HHS Secretary
March 18, 2021 – Xavier Becerra was confirmed as secretary for health and human services by the U.S. Senate on Thursday.
The vote was 50-49, and Senator Susan Collins of Maine was the only Republican to back his endorsement, the New York Times reported.
Becerra is a Mexican immigrant son who became a member of Congress and the California Attorney General.
He will be the first Latino to oversee HHS and take responsibility as the Biden government is pulling the nation out of the coronavirus pandemic, which has already caused more than half a million deaths and hit people of color particularly hard, reported the times.
