Far-right French leader Marine Le Pen is increasing her chances of winning the first round of next year’s presidential election, according to an Ifop Fiducial poll published by Le Journal du Dimanche.
The National Rally party leader would be number one in six out of ten scenarios in the first round if the ballots were cast this Sunday, the poll showed. It would then be beaten in the second round for the top two candidates, with 46% in a runoff against President Emmanuel Macron’s 54%, it said.
“The results reflect the strong momentum of Le Pen as well as the difficulties faced by President Emmanuel Macron in connection with the health crisis,” Frederic Dabi, deputy general manager of Ifop, was quoted in Le Journal du Dimanche. “Never before, with only a year to go, has a National Rally candidate achieved such results.”

Even President Macron does not take the Paris Agreement seriously – in February of this year a French court ruled that France would not honor its commitments under the Paris Agreement.
Marine Le Pen is still seen as an outsider. The French presidential elections will take place in two rounds, with the two strongest candidates making it to the second round. Marine will almost certainly make it to the second round, but she will face an uphill battle to defeat the votes of Macron or any other establishment candidate who does.
Even so, France’s 2022 election will be a real popcorn moment. If Le Pen is elected president, and if she follows her gut and tears up the Paris Agreement, President Harris could be in the delicious position of signing up to a climate deal that even the host country rejected.
