“Walrus Info and Myths – A Scientific Abstract for All Ages” – with that?

Book Review by Kip Hansen – September 1, 2021

If you have more than one walrus, do you say “two walruses”? Or is it like hippopotamus whose plural is hippopotamus? Or should you just play it safe and not risk the plural? Life is full of daring decisions, all of which run the risk of being ignorant, uneducated, or just plain stupid.

To cheer! The invaluable and wonderful Dr. Susan Crockford rides to your rescue with her latest book: “Walrus Facts and Myths – A Scientific Summary for All Ages”. Available at your favorite online bookstore. [ here and for our Canadian readers, here ]

No, this is not a picture of me, this is a male walrus with the rough skin bumps that are only common on male walruses – bumps called “bosses”. Just one of the miraculous and sometimes crazy facts that you, your children, and your grandchildren can learn from reading this wonderful little book. Only 36 fact-filled pages, many with great photographs of walruses (yes, it’s either “walrus” or “walruses” but never “walruses”).

This new book is the second in Susan Crockford’s Facts and Myths Series – the first was “Polar Bear Facts and Myths – A Scientific Summary for All Ages”. Since the walrus and polar bear share roughly the same range, you’ll find some photos of walrus and polar bears interacting.

Crockford’s facts-and-myths format makes reading easy and clear for younger readers, and helps clear up common misconceptions about these interesting animals. It’s just as informative for adults – a take-away book for a quick learning experience – all at once or one fact at a time.

My favorite editor shared my pre-review copy and noted:

“A very interesting and enjoyable book! I like the myth vs. fact approach … Easy to read, digest and learn. ”

And that’s it. Put a copy on your coffee table. Buy a hard copy so your kids can read and reread it so they can pick it up in a curious moment. Donate a copy to your child’s elementary or middle school.

Thanks to Dr. Crockford for another strictly scientifically correct book on the subject of nature – I’m looking forward to the next one in the series! I recommend this book to all of you.
