The Texas storm exhibits what it appears wish to have one President of all the United States

In contrast, Donald Trump repeatedly delayed disaster relief for parts of the country that he did not believe was Trump. After Hurricane Maria in 2017, Trump repeatedly whined about funding for disaster relief for Puerto Rico, attacked Congress for passing too much money – when it was actually insufficient – and didn’t change his mind until the election approached. When an earthquake struck Puerto Rico in early 2020, Trump again forced the island to wait for the help it needed, while also imposing strict restrictions on the use of the aid.

California also bore the brunt of Trump’s disdain for someone outside of his own base. It initially turned down a disaster relief application in October 2020 when California battled six major forest fires before reversing course days later. It came after a 2019 threat to cut disaster funding related to forest fires. And after a similar threat in 2018. And an attempt in January 2019 to stop aid to the victims of the forest fires in 2018.

Puerto Rico waited years and never got the relief it needed. California received its aid in a timely manner, but under constant threat and abuse, with the pervasive fear that Trump would really enforce his threats. Texas basically got its emergency statement as soon as Governor Greg Abbott requested it. Because as Biden repeatedly said during his election campaign and in his inaugural address, he wants to be a “President for all Americans”. Even those who didn’t vote for him.

Of course, it’s not just Trump. Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn had a letter asking Abbott for help – another reminder that both Cruz and Cornyn voted against aid to Hurricane Sandy in 2013.

Texans are being asked to conserve energy by not running large appliances wherever possible – like putting that laundry load off for a few days – and reducing their heat to 68, a number that is an indictment of culture because seriously , 68 is ridiculously warm, put on a sweater and don’t waste any more energy.

That said, it’s important to understand that while thThis weather isn’t a particularly big deal for many parts of the country. It’s really a serious problem in an area that doesn’t have the infrastructure to handle significant amounts of snow or very low temperatures. This is absolutely an emergency. It is good that the United States now has a president who is responding appropriately, without threats and tantrums. It is unfortunate that there are still senators in Texas who will not return favors when the seeking state finds it appropriate to target the culture war.
