The overwhelming majority of Individuals are in favor of masks mandates. Republicans are the screaming minority
The new Axios-Ipsos survey published on Tuesday confirmed what other surveys have shown: The majority of Americans support science-based mask mandates to protect themselves and their loved ones from infection with COVID-19 and further spread in the US population.
Regarding the mask requirement in schools, 69% of respondents support their local counties requiring universal masking in schools for students, teachers and administrators. The partisan distribution was 92% support among Democrats, 67% support among independents, and 44% support among Republicans. Less than a third of those surveyed, 30%, refused to wear a mask at school.
A similar partisan dynamic was evident when it came to the question of whether state and local governments require masking in the public domain, which received a total of 64% support. The vast majority of Democrats (88%) supported such mandates, while less than half of Republicans (40%) supported them.
But perhaps the most politically interesting statistic is the fact that only a third of Americans support state laws that prevent local officials from requiring masks such as those enacted by GOP governments. Ron DeSantis from Florida and Greg Abbott from Texas. Overall, 66% oppose laws that handcuff local officials, and 77% oppose debt relief from local governments and school districts that introduce masking requirements, as DeSantis has threatened.
Last week I argued that House Republicans were decidedly not focusing on a 50-plus-1 strategy by opposing masks and medical experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci scolded.
What the new data makes clear is that House Republicans and many GOP governors are explicitly risking the lives of their constituents to get the vote of only a third of Americans. It’s just insanely sick.
