The household of the imprisoned American journalist is “very, very involved” for his well being, as Covid ranges are rising
Danny Fenster, a U.S. journalist detained in Myanmar since May, has family concerns about his health as Covid-19 levels rise across the country.
Bryan Fenster, Fenster’s older brother, told CNBC’s “The News with Shepard Smith” that Fenster had symptoms of Covid early last week when his parents spoke to him. Bryan said there was no evidence that any action was being taken to help his brother.
“No treatment, no testing, so we’re very frustrated, very, very concerned,” said Bryan.
Danny Fenster, 37, is the editor-in-chief of the news magazine “Frontier Myanmar”. He was arrested at Yangon International Airport on May 24 before boarding a plane to Kuala Lumpur, just months after the February coup in which the military took control of the country from its democratically elected government.
The military government accused windows of incitement to violence, the allegations he denies. Fenster appeared in court last month and faces a possible three-year prison term. His next hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
Bryan told host Shepard Smith that there was “no evidence” that the country’s legal system could lead to the release of Windows.
“Unfortunately, we did not receive any information at any of these hearings,” said Bryan. “He shows up, they speak Burmese, he doesn’t really understand what’s going on, and they’re sending him back to jail.”
Bryan added that he wanted Window to know that his family “won’t rest until he’s home”.
The Myanmar Embassy in Washington and the State Department did not immediately respond to CNBC’s requests for comment.
