Republicans aren’t letting go of the Trump character cult, polls present
“In our experience, these electoral officials never intend to count invalid votes or to admit someone who is not eligible to vote or to prevent someone who is eligible to vote from voting, ”a Texas county electoral administrator told the New York Times. “However, we see this as a foundation, as a kind of rationale, in some of the bills that are currently being drafted. And I don’t know where it’s from because it’s not based on reality. “
[Raises hand]
I know where it comes from! A poisonous combination of a longstanding Republican effort to gain a partisan advantage by making it hard to vote and Donald Trump’s insistence that he could not possibly have lost the 2020 election without widespread fraud.
The same poll by CBS News, in which 47% of Republicans said they thought their party should win by changing state voting rules, found that only 37% said it was very important that Republican candidates and officials understand allegations of electoral fraud Support 2020 – but 80% said it was the right move for Republicans in the House to remove MP Liz Cheney from their leadership when her great sin refused to do so. She wasn’t on message with the party, said 69% of those who agreed to her removal. They were wrong in the 2020 elections, said 57%. She didn’t support Trump, 52% said. And a very honest 34% said, “Infidelity is punished.”
Two out of three Republicans told the pollster that loyalty to Trump was important. Even larger majorities said the party should follow suit on economic issues, immigration issues, leadership and dealing with the media. In other words, the 73% who said they wanted their party to propose important laws either lied or didn’t know about Trump’s records because he was never a big law guy.
This is a case where polls are interesting, but we have to be ready to examine what people and parties are saying and what they are doing. Saying that you want your party to propose important laws and win votes by getting more votes on politics and ideas are things that everyone knows to say – but the latter position hardly a majority of can do Getting Republicans out as their state. The legislature at the highest level makes it clear through its measures that the strategy of winning is about making voting so difficult that blacks and Latinos as well as Asians, young people and people with low incomes are disproportionately affected.
And the numbers that show just how important Republicans are to personal loyalty to Trump? These show what has become of their party: a personality cult that revolves around an authoritarian would-be dictator. When what people say and what they do fall apart, believe what they do.
