MONDAY, July 26, 2021 (HealthDay News) – Eight in ten American adults who haven’t received a COVID-19 vaccine say they likely won’t get one, a new survey shows.
The results mean “there will be more preventable cases, preventable hospital admissions and preventable deaths,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, told the Associated Press.
Among those who have not been vaccinated, 35% said they are unlikely to be vaccinated and 45% said they definitely will not, while only 3% said they will definitely get the vaccinations and 16% said they will definitely not. that they are likely to do so on the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey.
Although vaccines have been shown to provide strong protection against the new coronavirus, the survey also found that 64% of unvaccinated adults have little or no confidence that vaccines against variants of coronavirus will be effective, including the Delta variant, the 83% of new cases account for in the US, the AP reported.
Of those already vaccinated, 86% have at least some confidence that the vaccines will protect them.
“We always knew that no matter what the data showed, part of the population would be hard to convince. [and] many people are not convinced, “Adalja told the AP.
COVID-19 cases in the US have almost tripled in the past two weeks. Like other senior officials, Adalja says the current surge in cases is “a pandemic of the unvaccinated” as they are responsible for almost all COVID-19 hospital admissions and deaths.
Politics seems to be key: The poll also found that 43% of Republicans said they had no chance and definitely or probably won’t get one, compared to just 10% of Democrats, the AP reported.
There are also significant age and educational differences. While 37% of adults under 45 said they had not been vaccinated and were unlikely to get vaccinated, only 16% of older respondents said the same. Almost a third (30%) of those without a college degree said they had no chance and likely won’t get a chance, compared with 18% of those with a college degree.
Overall, 56.4% of Americans, including children, received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to the latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
