Late April is the peak of the main feeding and mating season for polar bears, and there is ample sea ice habitat in the Arctic to do both.
Sea ice maps below. Compare the conditions for 2018 here; 2015 here; and 2014 here. The sea ice peak that year was apparently “uneventful,” according to the NSDIC, because it had nowhere near set a new low record.
