EU is suing AstraZeneca for delays in transport vaccines

April 27, 2021 – AstraZeneca is sued by the European Union (EU) for delays in shipping hundreds of millions of COVID-19 vaccine doses.

European officials say AstraZeneca broke its contract when it said it would deliver only a third of the 300 million cans European officials expected by the end of June, the New York Times reported.

Problems between the block and the company began in January when AstraZeneca stated that the block would receive far fewer vaccine doses than expected in the first quarter of the year.

This has delayed the bloc’s vaccination campaign by weeks as cases have risen and political leaders have been criticized for poor planning, the Times reported.

AstraZeneca, which developed the vaccine with Oxford University, said the EU closed its contract months after the UK, giving the company less time to iron out any manufacturing difficulties, the Times reported.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is used in 135 countries.
