The European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) announced the decision that the dried larva of the insect species Tenebrio Molitor was safe for people to eat in theirs diary Wednesday’s only warning is that people with allergies to house dust mites and crustaceans may react to the new food. According to EFSA’s own assessment, it is the first time that insects have been approved as food in the European Union.
The EFSA Expert Panel for Nutrition Member Dr. Helle Knutsen was quoted by the panel as saying that among the studies required for new foods are “nutrition, toxicology, chemistry and microbiology, to name a few.” The Guardian reported on comments from EFSA’s Scientific Officer, Ermolaos Ververis, who said of the decision: “This first EFSA risk assessment of an insect as a novel food could pave the way for the first EU-wide approval. Our risk assessment is a critical and necessary step in regulating novel foods by helping EU policymakers to make science-based decisions and to ensure consumer safety. “

The idea of eating beetles as a meat substitute has received a lot of media attention in recent years, as the concept is being promoted as an alternative to meat consumption by climate change activists who oppose traditional foods. In fact, mealworms are just one of the insects currently being considered by European regulators, including grasshoppers, crickets and locusts, which are expected to be approved in a timely manner.

There is no problem with people wanting to eat bugs whose favorite food is approved for consumption. As for me, the insectivorous association with the Climate Crusade is. I worry that some people may at some point be forced to eat insects against their will when other sources of protein are beyond their reach due to carbon taxes.
