“Delay is as harmful as denial” – Watts Up with that?

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

According to the Australian Academy of Sciences, there will soon be a fire season like 2020 every year. My question: – If the forests burn down all, would we surely run out of combustible forests?

“Delay is as dangerous as refusal”: Scientists urge Australia to reach net zero emissions faster

Heat waves double and many properties are uninsurable when global warming reaches 3 ° C, says the Australian Academy of Science

Global warming of 3 ° C would more than double the number of annual heat waves in some parts of Australia, make real estate uninsurable due to the risk of flooding and fire, and “unrecognizable” many of the country’s ecosystems, according to leading Australian scientists.

The Australian Academy of Sciences urges the Morrison government to accelerate the country’s transition to zero net greenhouse gas emissions in a report examining what Australia might look like in a 3C world.

The analysis paints a bleak picture, in which heat waves in states like Queensland occur seven times a year and last 16 days each, and unprecedented firing times like the 2019-20 fire disaster occur regularly.

Prof Lesley Hughes, ecologist and assistant chancellor at Macquarie University, said the Morrison government could take immediate action to encourage rather than inhibit the uptake of electric vehicles.

“Delay is as dangerous as denial,” she said.

“The main message we would have for the federal government is that what we and the rest of the world are doing over the next decade … that is the bottom line.”

The Australian People’s Republic of Victoria has developed a solution.

A week ago, Victoria celebrated the construction of a green hydrogen plan that uses lignite and steam reforming to produce green hydrogen.

Of course, the “green” part is a bit theoretical for now. All of the CO2 produced by burning the coal is released into the air, which has led to criticism that the green hydrogen plant is actually very carbon intensive. Proponents, however, claim that the facility will be upgraded with carbon capture as soon as the time is right.

If Australia increases coal exports so everyone can mimic the success of green hydrogen in Victoria, coal incinerators around the world can be upgraded with carbon capture systems at the right time.
