CPSC warns towards utilizing a peloton treadmill after little one demise
MONDAY, April 19, 2021 (HealthDay News) – Users with young children and pets should stop using Peloton Tread + exercise equipment immediately, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The warning comes after a child dies and dozens of others have been vacuumed under the treadmill at home. One of the family’s pets was also injured, CPSC said.
Less than a month ago, Peloton reported the death of a child from a Peloton Tread +, which triggered the ongoing CPSC probe.
So far, CPSC are aware of 39 incidents, including one fatality, and consider the Peloton Tread + a serious risk to children from abrasions, fractures and deaths, according to a commission press release.
To highlight the danger, the commission released a video showing a child briefly trapped under a Tread + machine.
Last month, Peloton CEO John Foley urged people to keep children and pets away from his exercise equipment, according to CBS News.
He also recommended keeping the security key out of reach when the device is not in use, CBS reported.
On Sunday, Foley said on an online blog that the company is partnering with the CPSC. Peloton has no plans to stop selling or recalling the Tread +, according to CBS.
Reports of children trapped, pinned, and pulled under the back roll of exercise prompted the CPSC to urge users with children to stop using the treadmill immediately.
An accident occurred while a parent was using the treadmill so the risk cannot be avoided by locking the device when not in use, CPSC said. It has also been reported that if users lose their balance as a result, they can be harmed.
CPSC said if people need to keep using the treadmill for $ 4,295, it should only be used in a locked room to keep children and pets away.
When the treadmill is not in use, it should be unplugged and kept out of the reach of children, CPSC said.
You can report any incidents using Peloton Tread + online or by calling the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772.
