WASHINGTON (Bloomberg) – A federal judge lifted the Biden government’s temporary ban on new oil and gas leases on public land and offshore waters.

In a win for 13 states that filed the lawsuit in Louisiana, U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty on Tuesday issued an injunction blocking President Joe Biden’s January 27th executive order while the trial continues.

The Home Office said it is reviewing the ruling and will obey it.

The agency said it was working on an interim report that will “outline the next steps and recommendations for the ministry and Congress to improve the use of public land and water, create jobs and build a just and equitable future of energy,” it says it in a statement sent by email.

The Doughty ruling requires the Home Office to resume its leasing program immediately, even if the agency continues to investigate the effects of the drilling.

Doughty, who was appointed to the bank by former President Donald Trump in 2018, ruled that Biden’s executive order violated federal oil and gas leasing laws. He also accused the Biden government of not offering a “rational explanation” for their hiatus.
