“Renewable energies … intermittent and unstable, we’ve got to depend on a secure energy supply” – Watts Up With That?

h / t JoNova; CNBC; According to Su Wei, deputy secretary general of the National Development and Reform Commission, renewable energies are too unreliable to power China.

  • President Xi Jinping announced in September that the country’s CO2 emissions will fall from 2030 and will be CO2 neutral by 2060 – four decades from now.
  • In the meantime, policy makers are making this clear Economic growth remains the top priority – and that growth depends largely on coal power.
  • “Because Renewable energy (sources such as) wind and solar energy are intermittent and unstable. We have to rely on a stable source of energy.Said Su Wei, deputy general secretary of the National Development and Reform Commission. “We have no other choice. For a period of time, we may need to use coal power as a flexible adjustment point. “

In the meantime, policy makers are making it clear that economic growth remains a top priority – and that growth depends largely on coal power. Beijing has a GDP target of 6% this year, a level that analysts say would allow authorities to address long-term issues such as the country’s high debt level.

“China’s energy structure is dominated by coal power. This is an objective reality, ”said Su Wei, deputy secretary general of the National Development and Reform Commission. CNBC translated its Mandarin-language comments it made after Xi’s separate remarks at a US-led climate change summit of world leaders late last week.

“Since renewables (like wind and solar) are intermittent and unstable, we have to rely on a stable source of energy,” said Su. “We have no other choice. For a period of time, we may need to use coal power as a flexible adjustment point. “

He added that coal is readily available while renewable energies need to be developed in China.

Renewable energies would never be a viable option for China. They tried, but their renewable energy experiments were plagued by disruptions and problems like wind turbines icing up in winter.

Regular readers may have noticed that I am not a fan of the Chinese system of government. However, one of its few advantages over the West is that the Chinese government is dominated by engineers and scientists who know how to do a few simple calculations.
