According to the New Zealand government, it should be possible to maintain current meat production with significantly reduced numbers of cattle as long as farmers continue to improve productivity and increase the meat content per head of beef.

New Zealand unveiled a blueprint on Sunday to phase out gasoline-powered cars while the dairy industry, a key pillar of the economy, must cut cow numbers as part of an ambitious plan to be carbon neutral by 2050.
The changes are one of a series of recommendations the Climate Change Commission is making to the government on what steps New Zealand must take to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change.

In order to reduce the methane gas content, farmers would have to improve animal performance and at the same time reduce inventory levels by around 15 percent compared to 2018 to 2030.
“If farmers can continue to achieve productivity improvements in line with historical trends, those results could be achieved while keeping total production at levels similar to today,” the report said.
