The Biden government is suspending federal oil and gas permits

(Reuters) – The Biden government has temporarily suspended state and marine oil and gas leasing and licensing while evaluating the program’s legal and policy implications. This emerges from a memo from the Interior Ministry.

The move appears to be a first step in fulfilling recently sworn President Joe Biden’s election promise to ban all new federal drilling permits, which is part of his broader agenda to combat global climate change.

The contract has been welcomed by environmentalists and ridiculed by the oil and gas industry, whose largest onshore drilling companies have stocked permits here in anticipation of a change in federal policy.

U.S. states and waters account for nearly 25% of the country’s crude oil production, making them a huge contributor to energy supplies, but also to America’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The oil and gas industry trading groups, the American Petroleum Institute and the Western Energy Alliance, were quick to issue statements condemning the hiatus.

“With this move, the administration is making us more reliant on foreign energy from countries with lower environmental standards and risks to hundreds of thousands of jobs and billions in government revenues for education and conservation programs,” said API President Mike Sommers.

This comes shortly after Biden, who abandons the Keystone pipeline.

To be fair, no one can say this is any surprise – Biden pledged to halt domestic fossil fuel production in the US during the presidential debate in October. With that in mind, he keeps his promise to do exactly what he promised.

So what do you do if you are about to find yourself unemployed and working on fossil fuels? Biden has a plan – Biden says you should “learn to code” and get a job with a big tech company.
