US oil production in the Gulf of Mexico increases despite obstructed offshore transport

Four days after Hurricane Ida hit the Louisiana coast, production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico is rising, despite damaged road and transportation infrastructure delaying producers’ ability to inspect their platforms.

On September 2, 1.702 million barrels of crude oil per day remained closed, about 93.5% of the roughly 1.8 million barrels per day of total US Gulf oil production before the storm, according to the US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement.
That equates to 1.705 million barrels per day of crude oil shut-in as of August 31, or 93.7%.

Additionally, 2.0 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas closed on September 2nd, or 91.3% of the roughly 2.2 billion cubic feet per day of the US Gulf before the storm. Compared to 94.5% shut-in on August 31.

While a weaker storm can cause producers to return oil and gas flows a day or two after it ends, downtime will increase after Hurricane Ida, which on 29 resulted in terminals and helipads used for access to offshore facilities will.

Port Fourchon, other Gulf oil facilities probably for weeks to Ida. offline
By DAVID WETHE on 08/31/2021

HOUSTON (Bloomberg) – Port Fourchon, America’s largest base supporting the offshore oil industry in the Gulf of Mexico, will take weeks to recover after Hurricane Ida struck the Louisiana community and left a trail of destruction on its way .

“How many weeks is a good question,” said Chett Chiasson, executive director of the Greater Lafourche Port Commission, in an interview with National Public Radio that aired Tuesday. “We have a long way to go and there is a lot of damage to assess and try to recover from.”

The damage to the port, which supplies about 90% of the production of the US Gulf’s deep-sea oil and natural gas wells, is extensive and widespread, he said. Louisiana Highway 1 needs to be cleared of debris so heavy equipment can travel south to the port, while the navigable waters around the port need to be explored for safe travel, he said.

GRAND ISLE, Louisiana (KTRK) – Some crew members stranded on an ultra-deepwater drillship in the Gulf of Mexico during Hurricane Ida are finally on their way to Houston.

[…]

The Category 4 storm devastated the ship stationed off the coast of Louisiana, injuring some crew members and leaving loved ones angry and fearful.

“They just left people on their own, and that just makes me so angry,” said the woman, who wanted to remain anonymous for fear that Noble Corporation would take revenge on her husband.

The crew aboard Noble Globetrotter II were not evacuated prior to Hurricane Ida, despite Noble Corporation saying the rig had taken “evasive measures” to bypass the storm’s path.
