The LA Occasions requires a “non-proliferation treaty” for fossil fuels to struggle local weather change – what goes with it?

Los Angeles City Council is outraged that the California government has not curtailed fossil fuel supplies. However, they have not taken any steps to ban the sale of gasoline or other fossil fuels in the greater Los Angeles area.
Op-Ed: Treat fossil fuels like nuclear weapons. Advocate a new non-proliferation treaty

Los Angeles City Council is ready to approve a call for a global fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty.
The approval could make Los Angeles the first US city – New York is also in the running – to sign the treaty resolution. It was introduced in November by Councilor Paul Koretz, received unanimous support in the committee and is expected to be adopted by the entire Council in the new year.
The treaty would do exactly what its name suggests: the signatory governments would agree to stop further expansion of the fossil fuel industry within their borders. A UN report published on December 2nd shows how important this step is: In order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the target set in the Paris Agreement of 2015, global emissions would have to decrease by 6% annually by 2030 . Worryingly, instead, nations are forecasting an average annual increase of 2% per year.

California’s failure to limit supply calls into question the claims of heads of state about global climate leadership. The state’s two youngest governors, Jerry Brown and now Gavin Newsom, have recognized the severity of the climate crisis, but their administrations have issued new permits for oil wells at the rate of 1,000-3,000 per year, according to the FracTracker Alliance. In fact, new drilling permits rose to 1,646 in the first nine months of 2020, an increase of 137% over the same period in 2019. The governors’ lack of interest in stopping new permits is due to the continued power of the oil industry’s lobbying and campaigning posts, which exert a powerful influence on both parties.

In all honesty, I’m shocked at the Los Angeles City Council’s climate hypocrisy.
Instead of wasting time complaining about Newsom or signing empty contracts, take the first step and ban gasoline and fossil fuel sales in the city of Los Angeles.
By showing us how well Los Angeles can function without gasoline or the evil fossil fuel products, LA is sure to inspire others with its climate leadership.
