MONDAY, Aug 16, 2021 (HealthDay News) – Four teachers died of COVID-19 in just 24 hours in Broward County, Florida.

At least three of the teachers were unvaccinated, reported CBS News.

“One assistant teacher, one teacher from her school, one elementary school teacher and one other high school teacher died within 24 hours,” Broward Teachers Union president Anna Fusco told CBS News.

The deaths were announced days after Broward County’s Schools Board rejected Governor Ron DeSantis’ July 30 ban on masking in schools.

The board voted 8 to 1 for students to wear masks in school, saying it would help keep students and teachers safe. Individuals with legitimate concerns or health issues can unsubscribe, reported CBS News.

Fusco said the news of the teachers’ deaths was “extremely frightening” but too common. “I hear that every day. In Broward or elsewhere, ”she said.

As schools across the country prepare for students to fill the halls again, Fusco said she was grateful for the Broward County School Board’s decision.

“We got a bit of relief from following mask protocols, hand sanitizer, extra disinfection,” she said.

With the delta variant increasing across the country, Florida has broken records for new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, CBS News reported.

K-12 students and staff returning to classroom study should wear masks, recommends the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
