33rd anniversary of world warming – a celebration of failure – so?
Guest contribution by Larry Hamlin
Climate alarmists celebrate the 33 years since the June 23, 1988 hearing of the Democratic Senate’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee that opened the door to global warming climate alarmism with testimony from the committee’s Democratic senators and perceived “experts.” “That their speculations about sensational prospects for the end of the world, which are supposedly caused by increasing global CO2 emissions.
A detailed review of the testimony from that hearing after 33 years of recorded climate history reveals a litany of hearings with flawed and failed speculations, guesses, and predictions of climate outcomes, proving the fact that the hearing got it all wrong from start to finish and actually represents one Celebration of an extraordinary number of failed predictions.
At the time of the hearing, some regions of the Midwest and Southeast were experiencing severe drought that prompted many Democratic senators and other “experts” to take advantage of it (as they always do during normal weather events, including droughts in the western US this year) . and offer extensive speculative claims that the US could expect additional droughts and heat waves in the future due to growing global carbon emissions.
The 33 years that have passed since then have proven that these Democratic senators and “experts” are wrong with the EPA and NOAA data, which clearly shows that droughts in the US and worldwide have not increased over this period nor the US heat waves, as the data shows below, as is the case for virtually every other climate area addressed in this hearing, with the specific information that follows for each of those areas discussed in the material below .
Numerous Democratic senators and “experts” claimed that the global temperature anomaly would increase by about 1.4 degrees Celsius from 1986 levels by 2021, based on a NASA GISS climate model, if emissions were not reduced immediately. UAH satellite measurements of global temperature, which began in 1979, show that since those hearings the global temperature anomaly has increased by only 0.49 degrees C by 2021, almost three times less than the erroneous speculations at those hearings. The erroneous NASA GISS climate model projections and the actually measured UAH satellite data are shown below.
In addition, global CO2 emissions have increased significantly since 1988, driven by the huge surge in developing countries’ CO2 emissions, which account for 65% of total global CO2, and yet the NASA GISS model claims that there has been no global temperature anomaly Has. This clearly suggests that natural climate variability determines global climate, not human-made CO2 emissions.
Following the 1988 Senate hearing on global warming, the UN IPCC produced a number of climate analysis reports and found that climate models have significant limitations in providing accurate future climate predictions, which limitations are not resolvable.
The UN IPCC’s Third Assessment Report (AR3) was published in 2001, more than a decade after the 1988 hearing. This report finally acknowledged that it is not possible to develop climate models that can accurately model the global climate and provide future climate predictions.
The report in Section 14.2.2.2 found in particular:
“All in all, a strategy has to recognize what is possible. In climate research and modeling, we should recognize that we are dealing with a coupled non-linear chaotic system and therefore a long-term prediction of future climate conditions is not possible. The highest that we can expect is the prediction of the probability distribution of the future possible states of the system by generating ensemble model solutions. “
In addition, the climate model scenarios used to assess future climate behavior are marked as uncertain (defined as “plausible” or “illustrative”), making their proposed results subject to speculation and guesswork and unsuitable for massively intrusive and costly policy measures.
Numerous Democratic senators and “experts” claimed that the rate of sea-level rise on the coast would rise to 2.5 inches per decade due to rising CO2 emissions, but NOAA’s tide readings by 2020 (33 years after the hearings Senate) show that the global absolute rate of sea level rise, at only about 0.7 inches per decade, is strikingly below the exaggerated and flawed claims of sea level rise exaggerated by hearings. In addition, NOAA tide level data at hundreds of coastal locations across the United States shows no change in coastal sea level at those locations, as demonstrated by the longest U.S. tide level record of 164 years at the Battery, New York location, shown below. Again, hearings over exaggerated claims about sea level rise have proven false.
During the Senate hearing, many speculative claims were made that increasing CO2 emissions are leading to more forest fires worldwide, but these flawed claims again proved false, based on NASA satellite measurements that proved that global forest fires are on a decreasing trend, as below shown.
The Senate hearing has speculated about alleged negative effects on global greening from rising greenhouse gas emissions, but NASA’s satellite observations reflect the opposite, as found in the following study, showing that a quarter to half of the earth’s vegetation is present In the course of the year a significant greening has shown in the last 35 years due to rising CO2 values. In addition, the hearings alleging negative effects of greenhouse gases on global forests are contradicted by a recent study by the University of Maryland, which also shows otherwise, as stated below.
Numerous Democratic senators and “experts” claimed that rising CO2 emissions would lead to devastating reductions in global food production. After 33 years of history, as noted below, the data shows a world record in food production of grain, wheat, maize, rice, soybeans, etc. The exaggerated doomsday claims made by Democratic senators and “experts” at the hearing proved again to be false.
The June 23, 1988 Senate hearing on global warming, based on a 33-year history, proved the hearings to be flawed, false and failed, exaggerated allegations. Climate alarmist’s 33 year birthday celebration of this sad event is indeed a celebration of global warming failure.
